F3 Winston Salem started 10 years ago on 01/04/2014. It was cold. Windy. Sub 20s.  My Father, @Starfish, got EH’d by an old college buddy from CLT to some workout group called F3.  I remember hearing about it over the holidays… watching a few videos… not really knowing what to expect.  Being the good son that I am, I obliged my father’s invitation to attend the 1st workout at Hanes Park, mainly to support him.  I figured it couldn’t be too hard as I was a 16 year old… I was in my prime.

We show up not knowing too many people… recognized a few familiar faces from around town or church, but that was about it. Don’t remember much about the workout other than Dredd being a hard ass, taking this thing too seriously, counting in funny voices and having weird names for basic exercises…We did a lot of the normal stuff. SSH, Merkins, Wheelbarrows. Nothing too hard (unless you are my brother, who potentially spilled merlot about 10 minutes in for having eaten a hefty breakfast beforehand, thus named @Chicken Biscuit).    All I do remember is I was not dressed appropriately for the weather.  I showed up in shorts and a t-shirt with no gloves.  And thus, my name came to be.

Here we are 10 years later. Some of those people who were at the first workout are still posting, some not, and some come on special occasions. But each one of those guys laid the groundwork for what F3 is today in the Camel City. From 1 AO, to now over 20. From Gas Groups, CSAUPs, HDHHs, each one who has participated in F3WS has had an impact on one another and our community.

This year has been hard for my family.  I think back to March 20th.  10 days after we learned that my brother, Will (who unfortunately never took my dad up on the offer to attend an F3 workout) passed away. 55 guys, including from other regions, showed up at the Iron Throne for @Starfish’s Q. On a grueling day, you guys were there for us. I remember COT. Tears in my eyes, looking over, being held up, thinking how incredible it is to know that each of one you guys were there. Over a month later, you guys were there at his service, surrounding my family with love and support. You guys cried, mourned, checked in, and lifted us up. As @Starfish’s backblast says; it is so much more than a workout. Thank you.

So, I hope as you are reading this, you are also able to reflect back on how these 3 F’s, at any given point in time over the past 10 years, has had an impact on you, your family, and each other. The mission of male community leadership has happened and will continue to happen, I hope, for many years to come.

OK… let’s get back to the regular scheduled program of writing a backblast. @Wobegon (Nan), in true leader fashion, voluntold a few of us to take the reigns of the Convergence.  Great…let’s hope an insurrection doesn’t occur on my watch!

Weather today sucked. But it could have been worse.  Lots of conversations leading up to yesterday afternoon on if we should cancel, postpone, abbreviate, move to a different location.  But the 3rd core principal won out and the show went on. Celebrating 10 years, we have to celebrate all those who came before us.  @Adobe designed some cool shirts with all past/present PAX, highlighting the #Redwoods.  Many were worn this AM (underneath the waterproof gear, I am sure).

It went something like this.

NMM:

  • The weather really messed me up… couldn’t even spell Winston-Salem Right. Thanks @Zima for calling me out on that.
  • @Lysol may need to be checked out for brain damage… or it may be due to the current business endeavors he and @Toto are in. Didn’t know what exercise to call or what to do during COT. Acted like he had never been to a workout before.
  • We got wet. Stayed Wet. It was cold.  Embraced the suck.
  • Lots and lots of MC and that is always what I love about Convergences.  It’s more than just the workout. Strong showing at Coffeeteria.

Announcements:

  • greeNest still on in 2024.  Next one is 01/20.  See @60 Minutes if you are available to help invigorate the community.
  • Crystal Towers Racquet Club (pickleball) is back on for Sundays. Hope to play tomorrow afternoon. 2pm. See @Starfish or @Toto for details.  Applications for the prestigious club are still being considered. Fees can be made in the form of cash only.

YHC took us out.

It was an honor to help lead today. Thank you guys for coming out and for the push each and every day.

So many memories and friendships formed because of this silliness! Done things physically YHC never thought possible, been supported and loved (through all my many “issues”), created memories for both my kids and me that last a lifetime. And laughter, my goodness the laughter. Sorry, y’all are stuck with me! Thankful for all the Q’s and great leadership over the years!
