Q: Palin

YHC has made a lot of bad decisions in my life, not the least of which occurred 11/5 when I asked about taking TT’s spot in the Spartan Ultra on 11/17. Despite some serious reservations, I took the plunge and thoroughly enjoyed myself Friday and Saturday. Sunday was a slightly different story as every single part of my body hurt in some way. All told it was totally worth it. I had thought of making a plea for a substi-q until I saw that Zima Q’d on Monday after running the Ultra, so I was stuck. I did my best the night before to attempt exercises to see what hurt least and formulate my weinke. A combination of limited variation and small (er than normal) counts made for a passable workout that I hoped would challenge the PAX. I even warned the site-q of a possible subpar workout, he said I was “dreamy” and so I went to bed with a clear conscious.

In the morning, the alarm clock worked perfectly, my neighbor (Bubbles) met me outside at the agreed upon time and we got to the AO with plenty of time to spare. All was going well right up until I attempted to do a SSH, the rest was as uncomfortable as I remember being at my first F3 workout.

This gave me pause to reflect on the changes in my life that have occurred between that first F3 workout and now. My first F3 workout was 11/10/2016, just over 2 years ago. I had just left a job that had drained my physically and emotionally when Tuco asked me to check out this F3 thing that he had been doing. He warned me about funny terms and weird nicknames, but assured me that it was a good workout, and free (I’m a sucker for free stuff). Boy did he undersell it. I am confident that my involvement with F3 has been integral to my dropping from 295lbs to 205lbs, embracing a career shift, going from 0 workouts a week to 4, eating better, feeling better, handling stress better, helping my mother as she struggled with alcoholism (2 months sober now!), being a better husband and happier in my marriage, being a better friend to friends old and new, running a 5k, running a 10k, running a 30mi OCR (see the smooth, linear progression there?), better handle the challenges and stressors that come in life, and countless other improvements in my life. In short, I am deeply appreciative of this thing called F3 and all the guys that make it what it is. Please remember when you are making small talk at the holiday parties or family gatherings, there is a guy there that needs this, be sure to open the door (and maybe pull him through it).

Palin, your transformation has been amazing to watch over the past two years! I’ve enjoyed getting to know you over that time, and had a blast running the Ultra with you. Great work, and sorry again I missed the Q!
