Probably the First, but maybe not the Last

QIC: Burlap

Date: 01 April 2023

PAX: Bloodsport (WB), Wobegon, Splash, The Singing Cowboy, Starfish, Drama Queen, Green Acres (WD), Burlap (QIC)

Months ago, YHC got the odd idea to create a workout themed around the music of Hall & Oates, but put the idea and a couple of details in my phone under “Workout Ideas” in the Notes app.  Then early this week, Boomerang asked  me to Substi-Q as he was out of town for a wedding.  So, idea met opportunity.

YHC loaded 13 hits by Daryl Hall and John Oates into my free Spotify account and created a playlist.  Then YHC came up with 13 pairs of exercises, a pair for each song, with some of the exercises matching the song title or lyrics.  YHC reached out to Starfish who has a much better speaker, and the plan was finalized.

We let Spotify choose a song from the playlist, and effectively Q the workout.  Here is how it went down with the warm-up coming from the mind of the human Q:

Warmorama — all in cadence to 10

  • Peter Parkers
  • High knees
  • Imperial Walkers
  • Lunges, Alternating
  • American Hammers
  • Diamond Merkins
  • Elf on a shelf
  • Lunges, Alternating
  • Peter Parkers
  • High Knees
  • Imperial Walkers
  • American Hammers

Yes, that spells out Philadelphia, the original home of the band and where they met at Temple University.

1st song was “She’s Gone” so we paused Spotify and ran to the track to partner up.  One moseys while other does 5 merkins and then sprints to catch partner and then flip flop.  Repeat until song ends — speaker and phone with Starfish.  This took us all the way around the track plus about 100 yards.

2nd was “Maneater” for Man-Maker Merkins and burpees at the basketball court.

Oh, when ads came on – and they were frequent — all Pax did LBCs.

3rd was “Adult Education” for SSHs and Parker Peters.

4th was “Rich Girl” so we moved to the tennis courts for Suicides followed by 40 Jack Reachers and repeato.

5th was “Kiss on my List” so we moved to the field by the playground closest to school for curtsy squats and Carolina dry docks.

6th was “Method of Modern Love” and we moved to near the rock pile — but didn’t use rocks — for Nolan Ryans and side squats.

7th was “You Make my Dreams” and we moved to the grass beside the community center for plank salutes and imperial walkers.

It was about 7:53 but we played another.  “Out of Touch” with dips and step-ups at the entrance to the community center, and in a few moments we were “out of time”.

With another commercial, we moseyed back to the start/finish at 7:59.

NMM — aka, Things We Learned Today

  • The Pax was confused by the lack of SSHs and the repetition in the warmorama and didn’t start figuring out the spelling until it was too late.
  • Though YHC planned on more songs thinking 3 and 1/2 minutes on average, we learned that H&O hits were long and that they had long intros and outros.
  • Several of the Pax knew most of the lyrics and are closet H&O fans, but we won’t divulge names — you had to be there for the sing-a-longs.
  • The Pax got to know what Spotify thinks of me based on the ads.  Results were not encouraging.
  • Bloodsport injured a knee early during She’s Gone but really toughed out the workout.  Watch out for him next week.
  • Wobegon did a good job, in my opinion, of checking on his son but letting him work through the issue.
  • Green Acres decided that 40 Jack Reachers weren’t hard enough and did 40 push-ups instead.
  • Splash was not a fan of “Method of Modern Love” at first, but when YHC explained the Soul aspect of the sound and song, he just said that he used to think he was whitest person on earth, but H&O may have surpassed him.
  • Drama Queen told the story of being given an H&O best of album by his nephews and being a little insulted but also pleased.
  • The Singing Cowboy did strong work as usual and was out front with Starfish on the suicide runs.
  • Green Acres announced at COT that he didn’t crap his pants.  So we count that as a W.
  • Seven of the pax made it to Coffeteria where an idea was floated to raise funds to buy YHC a streaming service.  YHC did not encourage this outrage.
  • We did not get to “Say it Isn’t So”, “One on One”, “Private Eyes”, “I Can’t Go for That”, and my favorite, “Sara, Smile”.  So, this is good news for those of you who didn’t attend, as I have enough songs for second workout to celebrate Daryl Hall and John Oates!!

Peace,

Burlap
