Pax list:  Landshark, Offsides (RP), Splash, Ripple, Root Canal, Thistle , Starfish (SP), Resistor, Goofy, Green Acres (WD), Boomerang, Bulldog, Parkay (WB), Spamalot, Hoptoberfest, Sgt Schultz, The Pony Express, Burlap (RP & QIC)

After a serious DISCLAIMER, we warmed up with low numbers of SSHs, ISTs, Alternating Lunges, Peter Parkers, Toy Soldiers, and Merkins.  Then mosey to the field with gear and line up down 3rd base line for the THANG:

Arm Circles (narrow to wide), Windmills, Whirlies, high knees down, butt kickers back, carioca down and back, Apollo Creed down and back.

Relay Race – thrown baseball racing running pax.   Space 6 throwers across the field at longest part. Rest of pax are runners. Throwers must do 2 burpees with ball in hand before throwing.  after first try in which the runners won handily, we came back adjusting number of burpees to one to make it more competitive.  Total of four lengths.

Back to behind 2nd base for throwing contest. Each Pax throws a baseball to back stop. Has it hit backstop. Q chooses reps based on throw. (Generally, we used the rules:  If on the fly, 5 reps; if one hop, 10 reps, up to five or more hops or miss means 30 reps.)  ANNOUNCE the exercise and let pax choose the thrower.  Exercises were:
• Burpees
• Jump squats
• Russian Twists
• Hillbillies
• Mountain Climbers
• Mike Tysons
• Nolan Ryans (left, then right)
• Ski Abs
• WWII sit ups
• Side Scissors (thrower for each side)
• One armed Superman plank (seconds) (thrower for each arm)
• Diamond Merkins
• Freddie Mercuries

Baseballs and Bats with DISCLAIMER and WARNING. One pitcher and 4-6 fielders with gloves. Batter hits.  Q determines outcome: Generally, follow these rules:  If caught in air or fielder makes a nice play, fielder calls exercise and Q calls reps or cadence. If it’s a good base hit, batter picks the exercise and Q calls reps or cadence. It it’s weak or an error, Q picks exercise and long count.  Rotate batters and fielders.

Return pax and gear to parking lot for two minutes of Mary.

COT

  • See @Thistle to volunteer at (or run in) the Beat the Heat 5k this evening at BB&T/WFU football complex.  Run at 7 pm, then state Championship race at 8 pm.  @Thistle could use help at water stations.
  • Shmedfest Aug 25.
  • JuiceBox has a torn ACL; keep him in your prayers.
  • YHC took us out with thanksgiving and praying for JB and those struggling with addictions of all kinds, and asking for strength to do Kingdom work.

NMM

  • The following quotes may or may not be attributable to the pax.
  • @Landshark — I’m just thankful to get paid to play a kid’s game.
  • @Offsides — There is nothing like the feeling of settling under and catching a deep fly ball.
  • @Splash — I love winnin’, man.  It’s like better than losin’.
  • @Ripple — I just want to do whatever it takes to help the team.
  • @RootCanal — I have warning track power, but that’s it.
  • @Thistle — You gotta play ’em one day at a time.
  • @Starfish — Throwing hard inside is part of the game.
  • @Resistor — I’m just happy to be here.
  • @Goofy — If you build it, they will come.
  • @GreenAcres — I was pretty good pitcher…50 years ago.
  • @Boomerang — Never f*#k with a winning streak.
  • @Bulldog — It’s a simple game.
  • @Parkay — I just want to give it my best shot, and the good Lord willing, things will work out.
  • @Spamalot — Sometimes you win.
  • @Hoptoberfest — I just want to go up there every time and battle and have a good at bat.
  • @SgtSchultz — Sometimes you lose.
  • @PonyExpress — Sometimes, it rains.
  • @Burlap — I’m getting too old for this.

  • HUGE thanks to @Starfish for bringing his gear including balls, bats and several gloves.  And thanks for pitching most of BP.
  • It’s difficult to throw the ball long and accurately without warm-up throws, as the pax discovered.
  • One of the early batters ripped a hot grounder up the middle and nearly clipped our pitcher, @Starfish.
  • The greatest physical hazard came when @Starfish lost the grip on the bat and it flew well behind the third base bench.  But no pax were harmed.
  • A few guys really ripped the ball at the plate — you know who you are.
  • A handful of non-F3 dudes in fatigues with an American flag were doing some training near the playground and rucking around the entire track during the workout.  Pax were audibly self conscious about being perceived as being wimpy with our exercises and ball play.

Overall, it was not the most demanding workout we have done at #Purgatory, but we did sweat a good bit and got in a decent number of exercises.  And more importantly, we had a good time.  Thanks to the pax for indulging me in a childhood game.

Perfect workout. Just perfect. All 3 Fs were present. For many of the Pax, YHC included, it had been decades since they had played baseball of any variety. Welcome back from Europe!!

Thanks, Burlap and Starfish. Always count on a fun and well-thought-out themed workout from you guys. Yogi and I see it this way: “I never blame myself when I’m not hitting. I just blame the bat and if it keeps up, I change bats. After all, if I know it isn’t my fault that I’m not hitting, how can I get mad at myself?”
