Hudson Hornet wins again at Purgatory

QIC: BAM

Date: 8/15/2020

PAX: Green Acres (WD), Parkay (WB), TPS, Bulldog, Burlap, Lemming, Boomerang, The Pony Express, Splash, The Singing Cowboy, BAM

As the Q was preparing for Purgatory and reflecting on F3 Winston-Salem and all the beatdowns attended, remembered we used to end some workouts with classic relay races.  You know, like we used to at the end of practices.

So, that got YHC thinking about a racing themed beat down.  Which naturally led to thinking about the Hudson Hornet!  One, because it’s the last name of the Q (#funfact) and it was THE dominant race car in the early days of stock car racing!

Hudson was the first automobile manufacturer to get involved in it, and dominated the field in early 50’s.  Winning 27 of 34 in ’52, 22 of 37 in ’53, and 17 of 37 races in ’54!  And from Wikipedia: “an incredible accomplishment, especially from a car that had some legitimate luxury credentials.”

Clearly the Hornet and the Q share more in common than a name, championship racing cred and legit luxury credentials.

Pax began gathering in the parking lot willing to get rained on or soaked from humidity #Cantorrebusters.  It was a great mixture of young and old, ok, mostly old, but a great gathering nonetheless.

A few rain drops fell right at 0700, so we got started!

Warmorama

The usual good stuff

Moseyed around parking lot for some butt kickers, high knees, and lunge walks to loosen up the legs for what was next!

The Thang

  • Count off by 2’s – pax were successful at this (less success later in the beatdown)
  • The race is on!
  • Relay race – Al Gore while you wait to run and plank after you run
  • A heated race that ended in a tie, but no hammies were snapped or strained, so that’s a win!
  • To celebrate, all pax did 5 deconstructed burpees

Mosey to playground area for…The Lucky Horseshoe!

  • Since YHC has been Q’ing for a minute and actually saves workouts, pulled the Lucky Horeshoe out from a Purgatory in 2015.
  • 20 Merkins – run a lap (lap was left turns only and around the outside of the tennis court fenced area)
  • Merkins + 20 Squats – run a lap
  • Merkins, Squats, +6 pull ups – run a lap
  • Merkins, Squats, pull ups, 20 WWII sit ups – run a lap
  • Merkins, Squats, pull ups, WWII, 20 Lunges each leg #crowdpleaser – run a lap
  • Squats, pull ups, WWII, Lunges – run a lap
  • Pull ups, WWII, Lunges – run a lap
  • WWII, Lunges – run a lap
  • Lunges – run a lap

FYI – Splash was the clear winner of this race, and Lemming ain’t from the South

Mosey to parking lot for some Del Browns! Another Old School classic

  • 10 Dips
  • Crab Walk to center
  • 10 Diamond Merkins
  • Crab Walk to other side of parking lot
  • 10 Wide Merkins

Just enough time for one more race!

  • After some tired confusions, Teams 1 & 2 got lined up and launched into an epic relay race
  • Again, no hammies were pulled or strained, so that’s a win!

“Mosey” back to cars for some Mary

Fin!

NMM

  • Splash hadn’t seen pre-tweets and wondered if we’d be under cover if it rained, we wouldn’t
  • Bulldog was slightly late in arriving, but was forgiven and jumped right in
  • There were some nerves at the first relay race, pax weren’t quite as warmed up as Q hoped, and based on advanced ages….
  • Rain quickly stopped and pax were left with another beatdown in 100% humidity
  • Lucky Horseshoe was fun and 20 lunges both legs is a lot
  • Pony is still seeking the right balance between posting too often and not often enough
  • Even though Splash was out front early, about half way through, he, TSC, and Lemming decided to do some real racing on their lap.  It was a photo finish between TSC and Splash.  Both realized the error of their ways when they got way too close to #spillingmerlot
  • TPS actually called the Q nice when we only did Del Browns across the parking lot once and didn’t make folks go back.
  • TSC, still reeling from his sprint around the track earlier, had some trouble remembering his right from his left and Bulldog tried to defect teams, so the 2nd relay race took a minute to get started
  • Per usual, all pax looked like it had rained or they went swimming with their clothes on by the end of the beatdown.  #sweatfest

“Sorry” to have missed this. Well, not really sorry about the workout, but missed seeing the guys. Strong work and creativity.
