The Hive is Alive

QIC: Turnover

Date: 6.23.20

PAX: $5 Footlong , Tarheel (WB) , Spicoli , Cherry Pie , Root Canal (WD) , Zima , Bevo , Van Gogh , Palin , Huckleberry , Turnover (Q)

YHC had an idea of what I wanted the structure of today’s beatdown to look like, but the plan was lacking inspiration.  I knew WHAT I wanted to do, but the PAX needed to know WHY we were doing it.  After a quick ‘this day in history’ search on the Google, the answer became clear: On this day in history (June 23rd, 1988) YHC’s beloved Charlotte Hornets began their franchise-first Expansion Draft.  So the inspiration was set: the PAX would honor some of YHC’s favorite Hornets players of all time.  As a kid, I grew up going to Hornets’ games at the old Charlotte Coliseum. And I have some great memories of watching guys like Muggsy Bogues, Larry Johnson, Kendall Gill, Vlade Divac, Robert Parrish, Anthony Mason, Tony Delk, Matt Geiger, Dell Curry, David Wesley and many others light up the Coliseum and bring some serious energy to the sports scene in Charlotte.  No disrespect to the aforementioned players, but we were going to honor a couple other guys during the beatdown. Guys that I pretended to be, making buzzer-beating 3’s in my driveway. Enough with the nostalgia, here’s how it went:

This is #Flatline, so we don’t need no stinking warm-up.

At the stroke of 0530, mosey to Corpening Plaza and circle up in one corner

PAX then performed WW2’s OYO as YHC perfectly laid down the Mission Statement and the Core Principles and explained how the morning’s activities would go.

Station 1 – 41 SSH’s in honor of Glen Rice (3 time All Star, All Star game MVP, All NBA 2nd Team, All NBA 3rd Team)

PAX would then Bear crawl to the top of the loop, immediately opposite the waterfall

Station 2 – 15 Burpees in honor of Kemba Walker (Hornets All Time leading scorer, 3 Time All Star, All NBA 3rd Team, 2x NBA Sportsmanship Award Winner)

PAX would then Lunge walk to the far corner, opposite station 1

Station 2 – 33 Bobby Hurleys* (Editor’s Note: this was supposed to be 30 Bobby Hurleys in honor of Dell Curry, but YHC misremembered and went with 33 in honor of…) Alonzo Mourning (All Star and NBA All Rookie team)

PAX would then mosey up the stairs to the base of the BB&T building and top of fountain

13 Mike Tyson’s in honor of YHC’s all-time favorite Charlotte Hornet, Bobby Phills.  No accolades during his time as a Hornet, but he was a tenacious defender and YHC always loved the way he played.  As some may know, Bobby Phills was killed in a car accident in 2000 at the age of 31.  He’s the only player in Hornets’ history to have his number retired.

PAX mosey back down to Station 1 and start the loop again.

We completed as many laps as possible until it was time to mosey back to launch. I believe all PAX were on their 4th or 5th lap when time was called.

Done.

CoT

Our time together today in the CoT was fantastic.  It started off with @Spicoli sharing about his son having a birthday, the two of them exercising together, and sharing with his son the importance and meaning behind accountability and leading and following.  Spicoli went on to express his appreciation for the accountability and camaraderie that F3 provides.

@Spicoli also reminded us of the new AO on Monday evenings at 5:30PM called “The Work”. It’s designed and intended to discuss everything going on in our society and also improve our education about social justice and racial inequity.  These meetings will be done via Zoom for now.  “We have to keep being that light and kindness, but there’s more we can do. And the more that we bring along, the better we can meet everyone’s needs.” – @Spicoli.  Well said, my friend.

@Cherry Pie also reminded us of the importance to be willing and intentional listeners in conversations such as these.

@Bevo, @Spicoli, and @Cherry Pie then made moving comments about our responsibility as leaders in this city to reach out to those outside of “our comfort zone” as a group, get behind and come up beside our neighbors and say “We are with you”.

YHC took us out asking Him to grant us the wisdom and strength to lead the way we have been called to lead.

NMM

YHC, @Palin, and @VanGogh got in an EC 2.15 Miles. Great push, guys!

The most shocking development of the morning was that @Spicoli arrived before 5:30. Albeit about 30 seconds.  This lead to @Palin asking @Spicoli about his morning routine and how he is so consistent with showing up late.  Most of the sentiment YHC heard in response to this question was that the PAX would rather not know.

@Bevo and @Tarheel were in the same boat, arriving right at 5:30, and I’m sure they were a little alarmed as the first thing they saw was the PAX running directly toward them on our way to Corpening.

@$5 and his M are completely moved in and settled in their new place.  No unpacking left to do at all.

YHC was pumped to see @Cherry Pie this morning, as the first segment of the workout was directly stolen from a previous @CP Q at #Flatline.  @CP and YHC seemed to be the only ones enjoying it also. There was a lot of MC during the MARY portion, most of which seemed disgruntled. The Q blocked this jibber-jabber out. Another highlight (for YHC, at least) was when @Cherry Pie sang along to “Trashy Women” when it played. An excellent song on an excellent playlist.  Everyone loved it. It was a fantastic. Probably the best playlist in history. Everyone agrees. Believe me.

Unrelated: @Huckleberry may not have enjoyed the playlist.

As YHC was explaining what and how much we’d be doing at each station, we could all see the smoke coming from @Van Gogh’s ears as he was trying to rationalize the number of reps and why those numbers were being called. Each round we performed 102 reps. I know those extra two reps absolutely killed him. #OCDMuch?

@Zima was also perplexed by why the number of reps were called. He didn’t get it. But he did get back at me (see: everyone) by insisting that we make the Burpee station harder with each passing round. There was a mix of hand-release-180-burpees, Merkin/Mtn Climber/Merkin Burpees, and probably something else. Brutal.

Our resident Respect-Respect, @DrTootCanalPharoah-whatever the heck he’s calling himself these days, was all over the Hornets references this morning, calling out the Glen Rice reference even before YHC had a chance to explain it.  He was also at or near the front of the pack all morning, to the surprise of nobody.

It’s always an honor to lead a workout, but exponentially more so it is an honor to know and be around the fantastic human beings we have in F3 Winston Salem.  I truly am thankful for each of you.
