Space Is The Place

President’s Day. Sort of a holiday? Going by today’s poll, 1 out of 4 have it off, and the 5th is retired, so whatever. Not a scientific poll, but it gives you a sense.

To be honest, YHC was not sure what the turnout would be based on the holiday, which may have been what started the HC word with that ‘tan at VI. Frosty and I have an uncanny ability to have competing Qs. Massive respect for the big turnout for him.

I rolled up to the AO with about two minutes to spare and saw a 50% conversion rate on my 4 HCs, but the other half had all given the heads-up text to their Q. So we got into it. As discussed at the end, this AO is on a pass/fail basis, so being late still gives you full credit. Benveolnece.

Fresh off a Saturday Q in the high country, I fugred why not just use the plan again. I put my engergy into a Launch Pad-Outerspace playlist instead, which tikcled my nerdy music heart to no fixed end.

The beatdown:

The Kirk: an F3 classic from Charlotte. Always a crowd pleaser.

  • 7 Burpees
  • 14 Merkins
  • 21 American Hammers
  • 28 Squats
  • 35 Jack Reachers
  • 42 LBCs
  • Run a lap down the parking lot.
  • SAH-LAM the 15 pound slam ball
  • Repeat-O

We did this for 12 minutes.

The Spock: one time I had back to back Qs, first was the Kirk, so what was the natural follow up? The Spock. So this one is a Wobbie Original. But first, let’s find some rocks.

  • 7 Side straddle hops
  • 14 Plank jacks
  • 21 Overhead press
  • 28 Curls
  • 35 Knee Ups
  • 42 Vulcans (formally the Roasalite–it’s like the Live Long and Prosper sign but with your legs.)
  • Run a lap down the parking lot.
  • SAh-LAM the 15 pound slam ball
  • Repeat-O

Again, 12 minutes. Rocks up, Mary By Committee. Good choices! Classics and deep cuts!  To absolutely no one’s surprise, Green Acres called the tempo merkin.

And done, right on time.

COT:

  • Those experiencing loss, aging parents, and family members.
  • Green Acres has the Q at the ‘Pad next week, not to be missed.
  • Our reflection was on this quote from Scott Galloway, and then YHC took us out in gratitude.

And our space-themed jams:

NMM:

  • Transcript called the Iron Cross during Mary, it’s a solid one. Looked like he burned off all the Taco Mama from yesterday with no issue and put us all to shame in his short sleeves. Even GA was not in the tank top yet! Tough guy.
  • Spicoli brought a good Velvet Underground story to complement the Lou Reed track, which gets you massive points in my book. He tends to use the top of the picnic table instead of the ground, which is both logical and looks kind of rebellious, for some reason.
  • Burns keeps his AO/front yard in proper order, and the addition of the slam balls was a nice touch. He admitted to only a passing understanding of the Smashing Pumpkins but thought ‘Rocket’ was a bop.
  • Green Acres skipped some of the running, not because he can’t run, but because THERE WERE JUST NOT ENOUGH MERKINS. Noted, War Daddy. Again, he just picked up the Launchpad Q next week, so if you want to check out the AO and get a solid beatdown, you know what to do.
  • And if you don’t know, ‘Benson Arizona’ is the completely random song from John Carpenter’s student film and a perfect piece of low-budget 1970s sci-fi Dark Star. Carve out an hour and 23 glorious minutes sometime if you have not experienced.

Great to be with this solid group and get the day started the right way. YHC will continue to deeply honor the sacred holiday that is President’s Day with more laundry processing and maybe a nap. Actually, I’m going to watch Dark Star first.

Thanks for the keys, Burns. Left them under the rock pile.
