We got started at 0520 – it was cool and clear. Sky full of stars and a full moon. An empty dew-dampened and unsuspecting field. These conditions are what we in the beatdown business refer to as “pristine.” YHC set out cones as close to 100m apart as I could without official measuring guides, placed some flashlights as markers, and gathered the troops for battle all by 0518. Some last minute stretching and conferring over the rules of engagement took place and then without too much pomp and circumstance we began.
Lots of sweaty dudes got their huff (and their puff) on. Pollster and Madoff were the pacesetters. I tried & failed to match them. Root Canal opted for the gravel track over the grassy field, and his shoes are probably grateful. Rubber Ducky brought the tunes and the maximum effort. Wobegon, Spicoli, and Drip were right in the middle of everyone encouraging us and pushing us lap after lap. It was a beautiful picture of what the IPC is about…a harder-than-normal beatdown embraced by our group in a true you-vs-you fashion.
We finished at 0610 and gatherd for announcements and CoT – YHC took us out remembering Petty Officer 1st Class Patrick D. Feeks & all those who have served in the armed forces before us.
Coffee was served in the shelter at ~0620. Drip grabbed a to-go cup, and Madoff, Spicoli, Wobey, & I shared a few minutes together before beginning our Monday. I’m not sure it could have been a more perfect start to my day. I hope you (yes, you!) join us next week.
