Have been for a while. You’ll catch me checking the Weather Channel app at least 10 times a day. I can tell you that Paul Goodloe, Mike Bettes, and my main man Jim Cantore have worked at the Weather Channel for 20+ years. I know this because while living in the fraternity house my senior year my TV remained on one channel – yep, The Weather Channel. I watch a few more channels now that I’m older, but TWC is my go-to. All that said, yesterday’s forecast for this morning was, wait for it….rain. But, ALAS! Upon arrival at Reagan HS, no one was more surprised than I to find not only NO rain, but actually being able to see some of the waning moon through some light clouds. Who woulda thunk it – the forecast was wrong. Crazy, right?

But today’s story isn’t about the weather and how it affected the workout. Nor was it going to be even if we had torrential downpouring as predicted. Further, one of the core principles of F3 is “…rain or shine, hot or cold”. And let’s all be honest – getting rained on during the summer months is great. Rain during the cold months sucks.

No, instead the story today is about eight PAX who (hopefully) were reminded of a Life lesson that we all have experienced at one time or another (for me, it’s been a regular event since I can remember), and that lesson is the Ass Whipping (herein referred to as AW). The AW can be literal, or metaphorical in nature. A literal AW, to put into appropriate F3 context, is when the PAX show up for a workout and the Q has freshly inserted Energizer batteries and proceeds to ground and pound the group for 45 minutes leaving them gassed and wondering if anyone got the tag off of the bus that just ran them over. A metaphorical AW, however, is when Life happens – things at work aren’t great, problems at home with your marriage, or kids, other family members, or issues with friends. In a nutshell, Life is whipping your ass. It happens to everyone, and at any given time. Usually unexpected, I might add.

So today’s workout was geared to be an AW in the literal sense, which in my humble opinion, helps us to deal with the metaphorical AW we experience probably more often. It was humid (might as well have been raining). There were lots of reps. There was lots of running. It didn’t stop. And at the end when someone said, “It’s 6:15”, we pushed it a little further. Yes, the Q broke the rules a bit. But it was a rule worth breaking to make a point: when you’re getting your ass whipped and don’t think you can take anymore, you need to dig in fight through. The AW, literal or metaphorical, will not last forever. You will be a stronger, better man for fighting through.

Tclaps to the men who posted this morning. Was an honor to have the opportunity to lead.

Aye

PS – I can also tell you that Stephanie Abrams recently returned to TWC from her vacation. The universe is back in balance.

I’m a weather nerd. Have been for a while.
