Feb 1, and we all thought we could drive on the mostly scrapped streets of W-S. That morning, we got a fresh dusting of cold snow and sleet, so the driving was the worst that morning of the winter storm. This did not bother D-Day and Green Acres as they can walk easily to the AO. It didn’t bother Superfly and YHC from old Sherwood too much, and surely Comrade was up to the task, hailing recently from the cold climate of Vermont. It did bother Starfish, but his car somehow climbed out of the holler and made it with seconds to spare.

YHC advertised an old school beat down with no theme and a playlist with a secret theme. Here is what YHC delivered:

WARMORAMA (typical fare for YHC bootcamps, so SSHs, IWs, merkins, squats, etc.)

DIRTY McDEUCE — 12 different exercises with 12 reps and some cardio after every set of 3.

Copperhead (“CH”) squats; CH merkins; LBCs (IC); bearcrawl to Highlander and back

Alternating side squats: CH CDDs; CH WWIIS; and bearcrawl

ALT curtsy squats; CH wide merkins; low flutters (IC); and bearcrawl

CH Jump squats; mountain climbers(IC); low dolleys (IC); and bearcrawl

The MULTIPLIER — four station rotation increasing the reps by 5 each round

Monkey humpers, then American Hammers (each side), then IWs (each side), then diamond derkins — rotations of 5 then 10 then 15 then 20 and finally 25 reps.

MARY — typical stuff for YHC and FIN.

COT — YHC took us out with prayers for safety and schools, for aging parents including Green Acres’ mother who had a visit to the hospital the night before, and thanksgiving for the ability to workout with these guys.

NMM —

My M was impressed that six pax made it out, as was YHC.

Comrade had just lost his job earlier that week and was looking for a good job as recently as a few days ago. Please keep him in mind and in your prayers.

Comrade also loves the colder weather, so that’s two points to make for the argument of his craziness — he loves this cold and he works out with a bunch of old goats.

D-Day worked hard and is in great shape, even when he doesn’t feel well.

Green Acres appreciated someone else leading and especially liked the diamond derkins — go figure.

Starfish wins the award for persevering and driving in bad weather, in part because he was bringing the speaker and the playlist for the workout. He is always generous with his speaker to YHC, and I appreciate it. He was outfront during the bearcrawls and led the way.

Superfly was able to guess the secret theme of the playlist about 25 minutes into the workout. The playlist was randomized over about 30 songs, so I don’t have them all, but here are some that I recall:

Love SHack, by the B-52s

New York, New York, by Sinatra

Under the Bridge, by Red Hot Chili Peppers

Oh, Atlanta, by Little Feat

City of New Orleans, by Willie Nelson

It was during the City of New Orleans that Superfly commented that there were a lot of cities represented in the playlist and he was correct. It included only songs about and/or mentioning US Cities. There are a surprising number of these. Texas cities alone number nine songs that I am familiar with without my using any internet searches.

YHC is thankful for these other five guys and for all of you dudes who inspire me to get up early and do crazy things.

Thank you, especially you, Green Acres, for the opportunity to lead.

Peace,

Burlap

Sometime back in 2025, YHC agreed to lead the premier non-running workout that occurs at Speas Elementary on Thursdays. This was before any of us knew that ice and snow and sleet would blanket the area for a couple of weeks. That Thursday was a few days after the ice weekend of Jan 30 –
