Palin – staunch defender of tradition and pageantry – lodged a quick and vigorous protest. Quite right. We will chalk it up to two countries separated by a common language and all that. The special relationship was soon healed and we then moseyed across to West Nottinghamshire’s finest asphalt wicket for a workout themed on the fundamentals of Cricket. 3 Overs – 6 balls an over.

Over 1 – Batting

We started with batting – everyone knows the key to being a good batsmen is to stride forward and meet the ball on the half volley – a forward defensive for the cricket purists. So we naturally lunged walked down the wicket – then honoured Victorian cricketing legend Mr. Burr P. Nethersquat with 10 of his namesakes, before moseying back up the wicket to pay homage to his teammate Lord Merkinwallop with 5 of our finest colonial merkins.

Lunge Walk – 10 Burpees – Mosey – 5 Merkins (x6 times for the full over)

Over 2 – Bowling

Continuing our tour of cricket fundamentals we concentrated next on our bowling form. For a bowler to be legal – he must throw the ball with a straight arm – no elbow bend. Naturally we did overhead straight arm block carry down the wicket, 10 squats with block while thinking mostly about Maggie Thatcher, and then overhead block carry back to honor Lord Merkinwallop with another five shillings worth.

Over Head carry – 10 squats – OH carry – 5 Merkins (x6 for the full over)

Over 3 – Fielding

A proper cricket test lasts 5 days – so we must build our stamina. So to close out we broad jumped down the wicket, did 10 WW2 while thinking about the Blitz, and then moseyed back for another lashing of Merkins.

Broad Jump – 10 WW2 – Mosey – 5 Merkins (x6 times for the full over)

We came back for a quick Mary and COT.

The Brits have been responsible for lots of fine music from Elgar to the Beatles to Radiohead – however I managed to find none of it. My hasty pre-dawn plan to do Scottish Bagpipe military marching songs saw me inevitably click the wrong playlist and instead I think we ended up with some vaguely Scottish Victorian era dance music – which come to think of it may be more appropriate for our cricket playing honourees.

Thanks for privilege and support lads – Im already looking forward to next time when we do a rugby workout.

Rubber Ducky I left the keys in the members pavilion at Lords.

11 brave pax headed to the Iron Throne of Great Britain to endure a VQ and learn about a strange British game.
